In Darklands, a limited set of skills represent a character's competences in different domains. Generally, skills can be acquired fairly easily through experience, as opposed to attributes.

During character creation, successive stages affect the character's skillset differently:
  • gender selection has no influence on skills
  • family background will define a basic skill set, depending on you selection
  • each occupation will have 2 effects on your skill set, depending on your selection:
    • a set of automatic modifiers is applied to your skillset
    • a set of limits is applied, allowing you to spend that much EPs to increase the skill further

During the game, skills can easily be altered temporarily by praying to certain saints.

They can be permanently improved by:
  • Train or study at an inn.
  • Take part in events - the possibly effected skills depend on the type of event, and generally are the skills that determine your success in the event.

  12. Speak Latin (SpkL)
  13. Read and Write (R&W)
  14. Heal (Heal)
  15. Artifice (Artf)
  16. Stealth (Stlh)
  17. Streetwise (StrW)
  18. Riding (Ride)
  19. Woodwise (WdWs)

These are visually separated into weapon skills (WEdg-WMsD), intellectual skills (Alch-R&W) and practical skills (Heal-WdWs), though they all work in a similar way, with one exception: Virtue is the only skill that can decrease, both during character creation and in-game.
